something big is growing in Belgium: students are skipping school every Thursday and marching through Brussel to demand climate protections from Belgian and European leaders.
The first Thursday, January 10, there were 3000 youngsters. The second edition, they were 12.000 and last Thursday, for the third march, they were more than 32,000!
The movement began literally as an idea at the kitchen table from two students in Antwerp, Anuna De Wever and Kyra Gantois. They were inspired by the Swedisch school strika activist Greta Thunberg, who recently spoke at COP24 and at WEF in Davos (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jan/25/our-house-is-on... )
They are planning to skip school every Thursday and the movement is only getting bigger.
They received huge national and international media coverage (e.g. https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2019/01/24/world/europe/ap-eu-clim... )
Who knows how many students will join them this Thursday January 31st?
Let's just say there's hope for the future and the young generation is showing the way to go, like real Global Citizens!
This is very impressive and speaks against all those who think that young people don't take any interest in global issues. I hope that they keep doing it!
Thanks for sharing this Jochem!
