Welcome to the Social Innovation Working Group of the of UniteIT!
Although "social innovation" is a relatively new term gaining popularity, the concept has been around for centuries, with examples ranging from kindergartens and hospices, to cooperatives and microfinance.
"A social innovation is a novel solution to a social problem that is more effective, efficient, sustainable, or just than present solutions and for which the value created accrues primarily to society as a whole rather than private individuals." -- http://csi.gsb.stanford.edu/social-innovation
One of the most important aspects is that these solutions are both social in their ends and in their means. As such, they are often based on the cross-sector fertilization between the public, private and public sectors, powering the key mechanisms driving the contemporary social innovation: exchanges of ideas and values; shifts in roles and relationships; and the integration of private capital with public and philanthropic support.
Looked at it from this perspective, we are all taking part in one form of social innovation or another, and many of the projects that we as individuals, or our organizations, are involved in, are based on elements of social innovation.
For any questions, please contact the group moderator Ognjen Andric.
