GOW 2012 case study in Latvia : Woman in IT –for more than 55 years..

Nowadays everyone is talking about the increasing role of women in IT. 2012 is also a year of active aging. So there was no better choice than Dr. sc. comp. Ilze Irēna Ilziņa, the first lady programmer in Latvia to be honoured and present her memories at the opening event of Get Online week 2012.

Ilze –Irēna Ilziņa has graduated from the Faculty of Physics and mathematics of University of Latvia in 1957, and since early sixties have worked not only as first woman programmer but one of the first programmers in Latvia in general. She has been in the ICT business for more than 55 years.

In 1968 Ilze Irena Ilziņa received her doctor degree in computer science; she is an author of more than 50 scientific publications, now working as a senior researcher at the Institute of Computer Science of Latvia.

Since 1992 Ilze Ilziņa is the moderator of The ICT terminology committee, thanks to her more than 8000 computer and telecommunications terms have been localized to Latvian language. This work has been invaluable for ICT companies in Latvia as well as for IT journalists and other beneficiaries.   And new requests to Ilze Ilziņa for help came from organizers of GOW 2012 right at the opening event - – how to translate to Latvian social media terms, like “hashtag”?

But most of all –ICT society in Latvia  knows Dr Ilze Ilziņa as a very cheerful, joyful, intelligent and elegant lady, one of the most active opera club member, experienced gardener and traveller.

A woman in IT that you would like to equal after 20, 30 or 50 years!
