Collaboration leads to social integration

Support to people with disabilities in using ICT is of key importance for their successful social integration and for improvement of their quality of life in general. During the Get Online Week, on 27 March 2014, first grade pupils of the primary school Ljupce Petrovic from Aleksinac, Serbia, visited Toys Library, premises of the local association of persons with mental disabilities.

Children lead by their teacher helped the members of this association learn how to access interesting online content. Persons from the association showed great curiosity and interest in acquiring e-skills and discovering the vast space of the Internet despite that in the beginning they were afraid. Children also brought small gifts to the members of the association containing CDs with educative content.

“Our attention was drawn to a young man with a white-grey hat. After each click with the mouse he asked cautiously: Have I done something wrong? Of course, he did not do anything wrong, and every time we confirmed his successful computer operation his enthusiasm and self-confidence grew. At the end of our visit, as a token of his gratitude he gave us a few plaster figures he and other association members have made.”
