Safer internet for kids in summer camps

Association "Langas į ateitį" and the whole team of Lithuanian Safer Internet Center actively spent this June visiting children summer camps to raise awareness about online safety. 10 summer camps were visited, where 700 primary school kids have participated in entertaining and educational events called „Safe on the Internet during Summer Time!“.

Why educating children during summer?

Usually during the school year teachers engage in educating kids about internet safety. However there is a lack of such activities in the informal learning environment, when principles of safe behavior online can be introduced in a more fun manner. The interactive activities in summer camps were developed to provide skills to kids of safe use of smart devices, to draw their attention to internet safety and etiquette.

Activities – educational and entertaining

The events were started with a discussion on safer use of smart phones. Children were provided with simple yet effective tips how to protect their smart devices. To make the learning as fun as possible, all campers were divided in 5 teams and participated in the following workshops:

  • Safe passwords, where participants discussed the importance of good password and together created the best password;
  • Online / offline balance, where acting was used to discuss activities other than using computer or internet;
  • Creative workshop with drawing and painting activities;
  • Posting photos online – which pictures are good for the public internet and which ones are better to remain private;
  • Fun internet safety quiz including “tic tac toe” competition.

Project team was pleased that campers actively participated in all the activities. These events are meaningful not only for children, but also for the SIC. Only communicating with children face to face about their experience and looking for answers to their questions, we receive the most sincere responses that are valuable searching for better ways to educate children.

How to organize such events with guidelines, plans and tips would be great for the workshop at the #TEAC16! ;)
