Telecentre-Europe AISBL concerned about the closing down of Spanish telecentre networks

Gathered in Berlin for our members’ strategy meeting taking place 23-24 February, Telecentre-Europe AISBL expresses its support to the Spanish Network of Telecentres through an official statement in which we request the Spanish Government and the European Commission to prevent the actual closing down of autonomous community Telecentres in Spain.

Telecentre-Europe AISBL is a not for profit organization who interconnects 30 networks of Telecentres in 24 European countries, comprising more than 35.000 Telecentres: public access venues in public libraries, education venues and NGOs where citizens can get help with computers and the internet.

Through our official statement, we, Telecentre-Europe AISBL, express our concern to the European Commission about the decision already taken by some Spanish Regional Governments of closing Telecentres due to budget cuts .

We have already witnessed the closure of the Telecentres of Asturias, to which can be added those of Castilla and León, Castilla la Mancha, La Rioja and Alicante among others, so we ask the European Commision to claim the Spanish Government and the Spanish Regional Governments for taking the necessary measures to avoid the closing down of these infrastructures that have already shown through impact data its efficiency and effectiveness in the so-called new economy linked to the information society, in which jobs are being created (6 in the economy linked to internet, to 1 in the so-called traditional economy), especially in a country where the need of generating employment is extremely high.
