Big events also take place in small libraries

Our locality – Pietrari, Romania - is a small settlement where 2,900 people live. There is one school here, and our young people study in nearby towns, being commuters or living there. For this reason, our campaign addressed children, unemployed, pensioners and teachers, lacking activities for high school students. The “Hai pe net” (Romanian version of ALL DIGITAL Week) campaign this year…See More

What does your organization do (100-word description)
Since 2009 the library services have highly diversified due to the integration of the library in the Biblionet program. We organize vacation programs for children where they can learn to use ICT techniques and where teachers and students can perform classes right into the library using modern teaching methods (giving the fact that the school does not have IT technology). We help teenagers to test their IT abilities or we show them how to complete a CV in Europass format within the “Surf the internet” campaign. At the library teenagers can also discover the way in which they can have a healthy way of life within the “Be Fitness not Fatness” program, unemployed people can see job offers, participate in IT classes and learn how to complete a file for employment within the project called “A job for each person”. Every year in the spring about 150 agriculturists consult at the library online papers and submit demands for subvention for farm fields (through APIA program), and 450 members from the Association of Retirement travel online with help from the Biblionet program and receive tourist guides made by the library for the trips which are organized 6-7 times a year.
What digital skills training or activities do you or does your organization offer (if any)?
"Be Fit not Fat"-The project began in October 2012 and still continues in the present. We informed about 250 children regarding the benefits of a healthy meal and the risks of sedentariness, realized 32 hours on health education where 16 students from the local schools have participated, organized fitness program at the library for 180 children and also the “Champions of health” contest which rewarded 50 children. We also replicated the program for 18 teenagers and 25 mothers with weight problems and drew attention over obesity, a disease as dangerous as cancer. The idea to realize this kind of project is new and “exotic” due to the fact that it combines virtual exercises with the real ones. In this project we also had help from local doctors and nurses and for trainings we used virtual trainers from the Wii Fitness consoles, while the information regarding a healthy meal were recommended by the nutritionists from Kilostop clinic in Bucharest with which we kept in touch via Skype. Courses regarding health education were held using Biblionet computers; volunteers and teachers from the 2 schools have managed to promote the project in the community showing this way an explanation of what “ Live healthy” means.
