Last 26th of April, Sustainia, an international sustainability think tank and consultancy working to accelerate action towards a sustainable future, launched a very intersting platform on global sustainable development.
The Global Opportunity Explorer is a platform which offers direct access to the most innovative solutions and market opportunities
Rooted in over five years of research involving 18,000 business leaders and 17 expert panels, the Explorer guides you through hundreds of sustainable solutions and market opportunities which address the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
Aside from mapping a world of cutting-edge innovation and new markets, the Explorer aims to help business leaders, entrepreneurs and investors connect with new partners, projects and markets to foster more partnerships for the SDGs and a greener and fairer world by 2030.
Moreover, it is possible to filter the solutions by sector (for example Education), as well as to submit new solutions!
This represents a great source of readymade ides and opportunities. Also, ideas are not only suggested, many of them have already been implemented – and that represents a proof that they work!
I think that it is important to focus on the level of implementation. For example, all solutions presented under the Education sectors are implemented locally. So, it is obvious that to change the world for the better, we need to implement such ideas and solutions on the local level, to provide proof that they work. To even start such an activity, people need to be educated on the importance of such projects.
And therein lies the problem. People need to recognize sustainability as a worthy goal. As the site puts it: “Aside from mapping a world of cutting-edge innovation and new markets, the Explorer aims to help business leaders, entrepreneurs and investors connect with new partners, projects and markets to foster more partnerships for the SDGs and a greener and fairer world by 2030.” So, we can say that they are market-and-business oriented. I think that represents a good approach to sustainability – creating new opportunities for work while opening up new perspectives. People can hardly think about sustainability when they have no ways to sustain themselves. Providing them with work inside projects based on sustainability gives them a unique perspective.
On the other hand, there is the general populace, and the need to get them understand the importance of such sustainable solutions to everyday problems. That can be achieved through education. Education on a local level, while focusing on values that can lead to a better future. And that is the place at which the importance of Global Citizenship Education becomes apparent. I can hardly stress that enough. Values of GCE lead to practices such as the mentioned suitability projects. And practice is what, at the end, makes values come into reality.
So, to conclude, I think that The Global Opportunity Explorer is a great resource, especially considered from the angle of GCE. It is a great place to get ideas that, if implemented locally, paired with the ideas promoted by GCE, can lead to a better, brighter future.
